RLM was asked to design a “forklift platform enclosure” that would allow staff to safely stack and retrieve tyres from high storage racks.

The standard “store bought” personnel lifting platform with only the one small door on the front of the cage was inappropriate and in fact dangerous when used to store truck and tractor tyres. The operators were required to physically lift the tyre over the guardrail, then push or pull it in and out of the storage racks, while in most cases larger tyres would not fit inside the cage and had to be balanced on top of the guardrail.

RLM designed a lifting platform that would safely carry a person as well as a truck or tractor tyre, both comfortably inside the enclosure. We also designed the platform so that any one of the three sides could have full-unobstructed open access, allowing personnel to easily roll the tyre in or out of the cage to stack and retrieve. This system allows the forklift to work between two storage racks, as the operators can now access tyres from either left or right sides.
